The second annual Backroads Gravel Fields of Gold event kicks off tomorrow night at the revitalised Blue Heelers Square. Backroads is WA’s newest cycling event, bringing gravel racing to the Mid West. 

Already exceeding its pilot year participation numbers, Backroads estimates more than 600 riders will complete routes up to 160km long.
 
Support from the Commission this year has enabled the program to be expanded beyond the weekend's cycling events, to create a whole Mid West experience including the free Geraldton Backroads Social Hub from 5pm - 8pm at Blue Heelers.
 
This is the first event the site will host held since it has undergone redevelopment, and it was made possible with a $250,000 Regional Economic Development Grant.
 
It’s part of a broader commitment of over $5m from the Government of Western Australia to revitalise the West End of Geraldton’s CBD.
 
The Commission are also funding an economic analysis of Backroads Gravel, to help to quantify and highlight the significant impact that this event – and other sporting events like it – have on our regional economy.
