The mining sector is pivotal to the Mid West’s economy, generating $7.7 billion per annum and supporting almost 4000 jobs. Such is its importance; mining contributes over nine times more to the Mid West economy than the sector does nationally.
While there are exciting new mining projects planned for the Mid West and ongoing prospects being explored, we need to think about the future of our mining communities.
The Commission is a supporting participant of the Cooperative Research Centre for Transformations in Mining Economies (CRC TiME) which is working to enable mining regions and communities to transition to prosperous and sustainable post-mining futures.
CRC TiME is a unique ten year, multi-million dollar partnership between the Commonwealth Government, regional communities, the mining sector, State and local governments and Australia’s innovation system.
CRC TiME has just released an Australian-first report which identifies billions worth of opportunities in improving mine closure and transitions.
